And he is back!
I know, I know, it’s a long time ago, but I have been unbelievably busy! You know what? Now you can see what I do in the time between Pride shows.
The middleweight tournament Final Conflict 2005, wow, what a crazy night that was he? I won’t go into details because it has been a while ago and we all saw it. We saw Wanderlei lose for the first time in Pride in his weight division against Arona. This HAD to happen of course one time, and it became clear that this was that night. A friend of mine, who came to Japan just to watch the finals, told me that he thought that Wanderlei beat himself; he didn’t fight like he normally does. It looked like that but you also have to understand that when Arona gets you down, he probably will KEEP you there because he’s just very good at the ground game. So going in “Wanderlei style” wouldn’t be very smart of Wanderlei, so he did the right thing, wait and see what Arona does first. Think about it, in order to hit somebody you HAVE to close the distance, and if you do that, the ground fighter can take you down, especially when the ground fighter is Arona who also has great takedown technique. Still I also think that Wanderlei didn’t fight like he normally does, and that cost him the win. Don’t get me wrong, Arona did a great job, very explosive kicks, in fact, the first takedown was because of a low kick that hit Wanderlei’s leg when he was just off balance, but that is the fighting game! So props to Arona, and for the people who I already heard saying: “Wanderlei is done” Please people, don’t start making comments like that, everybody in the world will eventually lose IF they fight top fighters, but Wanderlei is the type of person that will come back with a bang, you better believe it. ONE loss in over 4 years in his weight division and now they say he’s over? Sorry for the people who said that, because I think these people are not that smart, give him a break! He’s human, just like anybody else and can have a bad day too, also, just like anybody else.
Than Mauricio against Allistair. What a good fight that was! Allistair put himself on the map in this tournament that’s one thing for sure. People giving him NO credit at all? What was that all about? He choked Belfort AND Vovchanchin with the same choke to get to the final 4 and he gave Mauricio a run for his money! He was all over him but shot his load and gassed later into the fight and Mauricio is a person who doesn’t gas, actually, the whole Chute Boxe team fighters are like that, and he took advantage of that of course and won the fight.
Even more impressive was the way he handled Arona in the finals, wow, what a fighter he is, I still can’t believe it that he’s only 23 years old, it’s just crazy. We have a new Middleweight tournament champion!! And did you see the reaction of Wanderlei, what a good guy, it was so sincere. I say it again, the Chute Box academy is like one big family, and this showed it, tears were flowing, it was great! Now it’s going to be VERY interesting to see what’s going to happen next. Because if Mauricio wants the Middleweight belt, he HAS to fight Wanderlei, and let me tell you this, IF that fight happens, it’s going to be a crazy fight, they won’t hold anything back, take that from me.
A nice little story here for the people who didn’t hear this yet, and I don’t know if we said it on air, so I will write it down just to make sure. Mauricio had a nest of pit-bull puppies and Wanderlei wanted to have one. Mauricio asked him $600 (for what I understand) for it, but Wanderlei said that he wanted it for free. Mauricio told him that he needed the money and that Wanderlei has money enough anyway. So Wanderlei’s response was that he wanted to fight for the puppy. If Mauricio would win, he would pay him the money, if he would win, he would get the puppy for free. Well, Wanderlei knocked Mauricio out! If they fight like this for a puppy, how are they going to fight for the belt?! But of course there is also Arona, who is going to be HIS next opponent, is it for the belt? Time will tell.
The fight between Fedor and Mirko. Man, what a fight that also was he? What a super game plan Fedor had, just press the action so that Mirko cannot shoot his missile (left high kick) and that took Mirko out of his game. A big lesson here: Fighters, remember this, if you are so good that you always push the fight in training and don’t have training partners who push YOU back, you are going to have a problem if that suddenly happens to you in a fight, you are just not prepared for that, and I think that’s what happened. You also will suddenly get tired faster because your body is not used to that, your breathing pattern changes and that is making you tired. So make sure that will not happen to you! (Take a look at the first fight between Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell, the same thing happened there) Mirko did very good by the way, he hit Fedor with his left straight a couple of times, other good combinations and that high kick could have been way worse for Fedor than a cut, because if the kick would have come more horizontal, it could have been trouble for Fedor, COULD I say. Also his groundwork was very good I thought, the way he got Fedor back in his guard all the time, I think that he did really good there. Also his striking from the back was very good, so he fought a good fight too. Yep, it’s needs TWO people to make a good fight! And what about Fedor kicking Mirko back with kicks to the body? He non-stop surprises me with his fighting abilities and game plans. Remember his game plan against Nogeira? His hands were on his waist, this way he was way faster to protect himself from a takedown by Nogeira. Of course he was not going to keep his hands down with Cro Cop because of the high kick that he has, but it shows how he thinks about the fight, you heard me saying it on air enough times, so I will stop now. It was a great night of fights!
The people from FOX where there and they were blown away, they told me that they had never experienced something like this, they went to Super Bowls they told me, but this was something that they just never expected, it just rocked their world. And here I go again guys, if you ever have the chance to come to Japan and watch a Pride show live, you will freak out, so come and do it! But I also said that already like a thousand times, so I will also stop with that now too.
I did a seminar in Tokyo at my friends place Kokushi and his partner Kuma. Good people and they have good students too. They run a Krav Maga school there and that place is of the hook, they have to open a much bigger facility very soon now because they have a lot of students, and there are already a lot on the waiting list, which means that they are very good! And I noticed that, because the students picked the things that I was teaching them up in no time, I was very impressed. There were also a few guys there who compete in MMA, one competed in Pancrase and that’s always fun to see because that’s where I started my career!
